2x4 and More: 14 New DIY Structural Lumber and 2x4 Project Tutorials

2x4 design

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the planter box. Lay the legs on a level surface and then lay the slats one by one, starting with the top. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to secure the slats into place. Leave no gaps between the slats and align the edges flush. This step by step diy woodworking project is about elevated planter box made from 2x4s plans.

Introduction to Statistics Course

2x4 partnered with founders Beatrice Galilee, Diego Marroquin, and Alexandra Hodkowski to conceptualize and visualize the project through strategy, branding, and website design. Fit the hardware cloth inside the planter box and then staple into place attentively. As you can see in the diagram, you need to make a few notches to the end bottom slats.

Step 3: Cutting, Drilling the 2x4s

Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the slats to the legs. Next, attach the 2×4 stretcher to the bottom of the planter. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher and then secure it into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the braces and then secure them to the vertical legs with 2 1/2″ screws. We got around this by having Abby push on the end of the board while I lined it up and screwed it in place. We are having a great summer and I hope you are too — and today we’re kicking off another special week here at Remodelaholic!

Since I had tons of requests for more 2×4 projects, I came up with this elevated garden planter design. This planter box is sturdy, easy to build and it doesn’t cost a fortune to make. If you enjoy my design, don’t forget to take a look over the rest of my free plans HERE.

Simple, Easy, Customizable Kits

While I was cutting away, Abby drilled the pocket holes. For the shelf supports, she offset those holes toward one edge of the 2x4 to prevent the screws from colliding when screwed into opposite sides of the frame. Cut the slats at 24″ and then secure them into plans, as shown in the plans.

We stood the frames on end, then screwed the shelf shelf supports in place. We kept the support board spacing consistent by measuring from the bottom of the frame and marking the top of where each shelf support board should be. Pocket hole joinery works great here because it increases usable space, its strong and it reduces the amount of lumber required. It’s also incredibly fast to build, even for beginners. These particular shelves couldn’t be permanently attached to the walls in our basement because we’d like to eventually paint the paneling and replace the carpet. They are light enough to slide in and out of place when empty.

When using home value estimator sites, consider that these values aren’t market values. Market value is the value of a house at the time it’s placed on the market; it’s the price a buyer is willing to pay for a person’s property based on perceived value. The values on home value estimator sites aren’t appraisal values, either.

Buying Resources

Find the right homeowner tools to plan and care for your home and property. We refresh Zestimates for all homes daily, but on rare occasions this schedule is interrupted by algorithmic changes or new analytical features. However, we never allow future information to influence a historical Zestimate (for example, a sale in 2019 could not influence a 2018 Zestimate valuation).

Home Buying

Check that your tax history and price history (the sale price and date you bought your home) are accurate on Zillow. This is what your property taxes are based on — the dollar value of your property as determined by your area’s local tax assessors. It can go up as your home appreciates in value, but it is typically lower than the amount the home could actually sell for. Whether you're determining how much house you can afford, estimating your monthly payment with our mortgage calculator or looking for preapproval for a mortgage, we can help you at any part of the home buying process. How Much is My Home Worth?

You can compare valuations to a seller’s listing price or keep an eye on a specific neighborhood that you wish to move to in the future. One factor often quoted when thinking about how a home’s value goes up (or down) is the fundamental concept of supply and demand. In short, when there are more buyers than available homes, buyers will find themselves competing amongst one another, bringing home prices up. The size and usable space of your home and property, along with the age and condition, will also weigh heavily into its calculated market value.

Mortgage

It’s not possible to manually alter the Zestimate for a specific property. The Redfin Estimate is updated daily for homes that are for sale, and weekly for those that are off the market. The Home Value Estimator provides you with valuable market information to help you weigh your potential options for a home purchase, sale or refinance. Pennymac’s Home Value Estimator will take the address of a property and weigh multiple factors in order to give you a reliable estimate. This, ultimately, is the amount a buyer would be willing to pay for the home. Fair market value is heavily dependent on the state of your local housing market, in addition to the factors listed above.

The key ingredient to home price trends is how much buyers are actually willing and able to pay for a home in the current market, weighing all the economic factors that go along with making that calculation. Use the Ownerly home value estimation data to see approximately how much a home is worth based on the local area. For home sellers, use the property value estimator to find optimal market price trends in your neighborhood. A home’s value depends on thingslike physical condition, upgrades and location, and seeing an estimate before getting an appraisal can help you understand the true value ahead of time. If you are in the market to sell, an experienced local real estate agent or professional appraiser can often provide the most accurate value.

How to calculate home equity

A deck provides more outdoor living space, but does it actually increase the value of your house? Find out how much value a deck might add and the types that add the most value. In some parts of the country, we may have basic information on some homes — but not enough information about enough homes to compute a Zestimate. The Redfin Estimate History graph provides a look back at how a home's value changes over time. The Redfin Estimate value each month represents the Redfin Estimate average of all the days in that month. This may differ slightly from the Redfin Estimate displayed in the Home Report email, which shows a point-in-time value for a given day rather than a monthly average.

Get the data homeowners

Depending on its algorithms, a home value estimator site may update daily, weekly, monthly, or at other intervals. Some of the most common reasons a homeowner would use a home value estimator site is when selling or buying a home, considering a loan, or refinancing. Home value estimators can return results for homes on or off the market.

Homes that are on the market or were recently sold and those with updated public information will have more accurate estimates. Unfortunately, recent changes, such as renovations to the home, may not be calculated into the valuation. If you’ve done a major remodeling job, like adding a bedroom or bathroom, but haven’t updated the public records, it won’t factor into the valuation either. These discrepancies could yield misleading results when a user plugs in their address. In some cases, it’s a good idea to use a remodeling estimator in addition to a home value estimator to determine the value of a home.

Any number of factors might affect the value of your home, including the neighborhood you’re located in, the size of your lot and the age and condition of the structure itself. Search home value estimates, and access tools to optimize your home’s value. It could be one of the largest purchases you’ll make in your lifetime. For a variety of reasons—for tax purposes, a home equity loan, or retirement planning—you might want to understand how much your home is worth. Here’s how you can try to figure out just how much your home is worth in 2023.

A home value automated valuation model, or AVM, is an algorithmic model that estimates the value of a home based on data from the local market. It assesses a property’s value according to factors such as its size, age, location and the recent selling price of similar properties in the local area. The AVM uses a complex set of algorithms and data-driven forecasting models to give you an estimated market value when you are trying to determine what your home is worth.

The Meaning Behind The Song: Cruise by Nelly

cruise nelly

He recognized the song’s potential and decided to collaborate with the country duo to add his touch of hip-hop and bring in a different audience. The fusion of country and hip-hop was groundbreaking at the time and opened up doors for similar cross-genre collaborations in the future. It shows shots of women on vehicles and riding with the men in the men's cars as they go down the country roads.

Popular Florida Georgia Line & Nelly Lyrics

Jesse Rice, Chase Rice and Kelley — Hubbard was called away for some long-forgotten work obligation — had gotten together to write at Jesse’s house. They were working on a ballad called “When God Runs Out of Rain,” and felt pretty good about it — good enough to take a lunch break. As they sat back down to finish the song after lunch, Kelley started strumming the chords G-D-Em-C – a progression that Jesse had used as the backbone to a rap medley during long cover gigs. The song is a mid-tempo in the key of B-flat major with a main chord pattern of B♭-F-Gm7-E♭.[14] It is about an attractive woman that the male narrator wants to cruise with in his pick-up truck. Did Cruise receive any awards or nominations?

Cruise revolutionized the music industry by introducing a new sound that seamlessly blended two seemingly contrasting genres. It paved the way for future collaborations between country and hip-hop artists, opening doors for creative experimentation and genre-bending. The success of Cruise showcased the power of collaboration and widened the scope of what could be achieved within the music industry. The original version of Cruise by Florida Georgia Line features only the duo themselves.

‘GREAT F–KIN’ IDEA!’: How Florida Georgia Line & Nelly’s ‘Cruise’ Teamup Made (Controversial) History

"Cruise" was written by Kelley, Hubbard, Joey Moi, Chase Rice and Jesse Rice, and the tune was born out of a writing session with Kelley, Chase and Jesse. The three singer-songwriters were reportedly writing a different, slower song when the song's famous opening line, "Baby, you a song," suddenly came to Kelley. He then began strumming some chords and came up with a melody and "Cruise" was created.

Slip away for a 3-, 4- or 5-day cruise from Miami or Tampa, or cruise from Orlando (Port Canaveral) if you're in need of a quick getaway. A couple of months later, a remix by rapper Nelly was released, and the song then re-entered the top 10.[8] The song reached a peak of No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart in its 34th week, one of the slowest climbs to the top five in the chart's history. The song also logged 24 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, becoming the longest-running No. 1 single on that chart at the time, until it was surpassed in 2017 by Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road". Add a wide range of superb dining options and spectacular entertainment and you’ll experience your best vacation ever.

Explore Your Cruise Vacation

Watching Nelly perform alongside the duo, though, is a stark reminder of how in that exchange of ideas, the money tends to only flow one way; that while it might feel like hip-hop is “in [FGL’s] DNA,” it’s not. The intervening years have brought more efforts by both FGL and Nelly (among a number of other well-intentioned and like-minded artists) to correct that inequity. But “Baby you a song” isn’t just like Country Grammar — it is country grammar, a grammar that is as influential in country music today as ever. Experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment you will never forget while witnessing the icy-blue glaciers and unique wildlife of Alaska. Walk through Greece's enchanting, sun-bleached streets, or find your own paradise in a secret beach in The Caribbean. Our award-winning ships are designed for you to enjoy as you choose while cruising to the most beautiful destinations around the world.

“Cruise” would eventually take the top spot on the Hot Country Songs chart from Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” another take on Millennial-friendly country-pop crossover. The ship's itinerary was not impacted, the liner wrote in a press release, and cruise-goers will reach Roatan's Mahogany Bay today on schedule. Before returning to port in Tampa on April 25, the ship is scheduled to stop in Cozumel, Mexico on April 23. A Carnival cruise ship rescued 27 Cuban nationals found adrift and signalling for help roughly 20 miles west of Cuba this weekend. Songwriting Hall of Famer Linda Perry talks about her songs "What's Up" and "Beautiful," her songwriting process, and her move into film music.

Today, FGL continues to reign among the top male country acts such as Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and more. The push and pull between progressive-minded inclusion and the genre-agnostic artistry it can create, and appropriation — from barely perceptible to egregious and everything in between — lives within “Cruise” and its legacy. The song’s victory, though, was the integration of a Black hip-hop artist into a huge hit that anyone asked would call country, and the destruction, however temporarily, of the fundamental, racist genre divide that has defined American recorded music from the start. He didn’t become that guy, signing FGL to Republic Nashville (a joint venture between Big Machine and Republic Records) in July 2012.

Experience Great Stirrup Cay, our idyllic private island in the Bahamas, when you cruise from Florida with Norwegian. Snorkel with sea turtles, kayak along a peaceful coastline, or soar high into the sky on a zipline. Relax and recharge at our various dining venues and bars, including Abaco Taco and Patron Bar. "All of a sudden Brian [Kelley] pops up and strums a chord and starts humming this melody," Chase Rice told Radio.com. “He kept saying, ‘Something just doesn’t feel right — the syllable just needs to hit on this beat,'” Kelley recalls.

If you happen not to find what you’re looking for, you can even post a question of your own. “Cruise” is a thoughtful and upbeat track comparing a girl to Tennessee country-rock band, Florida Georgia Line’s favorite pastimes. The track was first released as the opening track for their EP It'z Just What We Do, but was also added, along with the rest of the EP, to their debut studio album for Republic Nashville, titled Here’s to the Good Times, also as the opening track. The music video for Cruise was primarily filmed in various locations in Tennessee, including Nashville and downtown Memphis.

It turned out to be something of a “generational gauntlet,” as critic Jody Rosen puts it — particularly in the form of its blockbuster Nelly-featuring remix, released 10 years ago this week. Its massive success colored much of what came after its 24 record-breaking weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart, whether that was songs trying to imitate it or the tidal wave of critical backlash. On August 24, 2013, it logged its 24th week at No. 1, the longest run at No. 1 in the chart's 69-year history (the previous record was 21 weeks held jointly by three songs, the last of which was Webb Pierce's "In the Jailhouse Now" from February to June 1955). It certainly makes sense that hip-hop influences felt as intuitive for FGL-generation country artists as for any others who have come of age since hip-hop became mainstream pop.

Our award-winning ships are designed for you to enjoy as you choose while cruising to beautiful destinations around the world. Along the way, enjoy a variety of superb restaurants with no fixed dining times, Broadway shows and thrilling waterslides – all of which will make your journey just as exciting as the places you visit. The year was 2012 when a previously-unknown duo called Florida Georgia Line, made up of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, took over country radio waves with their feel-good, debut single, "Cruise." The song and the duo soon caught fire, and it's a flame that has yet to run out. Not only did "Cruise" reach the No. 1 spot on the Country Airplay chart, but it spent 24 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, an accomplishment that has only been surpassed by Sam Hunt's "Body Like A Back Road." The recording by Florida Georgia Line reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 on its initial release, but dropped off the Hot 100 in February 2013.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

Live like a royal in England, uncover medieval mysteries in Scotland and venture to geothermal wonders in Iceland. Or sip flavorful wines while overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. With ports that change every year, experience all the best destinations on a Transatlantic cruise with Princess.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock. Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

Transatlantic Cruise Onboard Experience

Each stateroom is a personal oasis of calm, offering the very highest luxury at sea. Sumptuous bedding beckons, beautiful balconies celebrate the ocean view, and even a seven-pillow menu option awaits you. This is the complete schedule of Transatlantic cruises in 2024 and 2025. Most are in the spring and fall when cruise lines reposition ships between the United States and Europe. Throughout the year there are also cruises between New York and England on the Queen Mary 2.

The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days). On Transatlantic cruises, indulge in international flavors and world-class entertainment – like Broadway-style productions and an onboard casino – without ever leaving the ship.

Found in bakeries and convenience stores, Australians love their savory meat pies. Visit the iconic Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Sydney and tuck into one of their flaky pies filled with curried beef or chicken with a side of classic mushy peas. Enjoy the clear water filled with salmon, red snapper and trout along with the freely roaming wildlife, all combining to make Whittier a treat to visit. Bundle up to experience the culture and beauty of Tromso, one of the largest cities within the Arctic Circle. Santa Cruz on the tropical island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands is simply a remarkable place to visit. Learn about the Greek gods and the early philosophy of Socrates when you visit the incredible ruins left in Athens, Greece.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee. Santa Cruz de Tenerife welcomes you with its beautiful beaches and year-round favorable weather. The natural shoreline provides a home for dolphins and pilot whales, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site of San Cristobal de la Laguna offers a chance to indulge in delicious local wines. Enjoy the vibrant energy of this island city and its captivating natural beauty.

The price of a Disney cruise already includes taxes, fees, and port expenses, further enhancing its value. However, Disney cruises do not cover some expenses, such as airfare, gratuities, specialty restaurants, Port Adventures, spa treatments, bottled beverages, and alcohol purchased on a Disney cruise. Vacationers can select from various three- to seven-night cruises with ports of call that include Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico; Catalina Island in California; and Vancouver, Canada among others. The Disney Wonder will, however, return from Australia in March 2024. It will again provide spring break sailings out of San Diego for a few months before heading to Alaska again for summer 2024. If you’re interested in booking a stay at one of these hotels before or after your Disney cruise, please get in touch with The Vacationeer. Alternatively, taxi services are readily available at the airport for those who would like to hop in a cab without using their phones to hail an Uber.

All good things must of course come to and end, and Disney Cruise is no exception. When the time comes to debark your Disney Cruise in San Diego, the process is pretty easy but does require some thinking through your plans in advance. As on all Disney Cruises, guests can opt to set their bags out the night before and have Disney whisk them off the ship. Alternately, you can opt to DIY it which gives you more flexibility on timing. We also especially enjoyed Family Karaoke, “Anyone Can Cook” cooking demonstrations, and trivia in the English pub.

Which Airport Should I Fly Into for a San Diego Cruise?

We know our guests will enjoy exploring the island, whether they’re connecting with nature, sightseeing, shopping or dining. We were honored to be chosen as an inaugural port of call for the Disney Magic this year and look forward to welcoming Disney Cruise Line to Catalina for many years to come. We find that many cruisers who first visit by sea, often return for the island’s warm weather, sparkling blue waters, colorful structures and untouched green preserve that offers a truly unique Mediterranean vibe. You'll certainly pay more for the privilege of sailing with Mickey and Minnie than with some other family-friendly lines. But for those with kids in that Disney age range, or for adults who know and trust the Disney brand, it's hard to go wrong in choosing Disney Cruise Line for your next vacation.

Expect a solid one-third of the ship's passengers to be children, so about 900 to 1,000 kids. That means there are plenty of family groups onboard -- from single families and grandparents with grandchildren to multigenerational groups and family reunions. Embarkation ports like New Orleans Galveston attract a big drive-to market, so you'll find lots of people from the Midwest and Southern United States. Alaska cruises attract a tad older demographic, including couples traveling without children, but they're still heavy on the multi-gen groups. If you plan to spend time in the city of San Diego before your cruise or if you smartly are just arriving in at least a day before the sailing date, you’ll need a hotel.

InterContinental San Diego ($$)

Disney Wish has, by far, the highest number of annual sailings, with 105 three- and four-night cruises departing from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. These sailings all go to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay; some also stop in Nassau, Bahamas. In the past, Disney provided two-way phones in staterooms to allow family members to keep track of one another, but these were absent on our Disney Wonder sailing. Instead, Disney's new Navigator app allows passengers to chat with one another, and we found the internet even allowed for iMessages to be sent to one another -- even when logged out of the ship's paid internet plans. If you plan to spend any time on board by the pool on San Diego sailings, keep in mind the weather patterns I already mentioned.

Disney Cruise Line Returns to Catalina Island in Spring 2024

Disney Wish is currently a workhorse of short three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Bahamas, home to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Now, Disney Cruise Line has five ships sailing in those signature colors, along with three more on order. In a normal year, those five ships take tens of thousands of families on sailings to the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, Bermuda, Bahamas, through the Panama Canal and even to Australia and New Zealand. The special offers listed below are available to book today through Sunday, October 30, 2022, while inventory lasts. But in a unique twist, Disney rotates passengers -- and their servers -- through three distinct, complimentary restaurants throughout the voyage.

Disney Cruise Line has a simple loyalty program, the Castaway Club, with four "elite status" levels that you earn based on how many cruises you've taken with Disney. A three-night and 10-night cruise both count as one sailing for these purposes. However, on round-trip cruises departing European countries with a lower drinking age, passengers years of age can drink alcohol on board with signed parental consent. For round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, guests 18 years of age and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent. While some gratuity is included at Palo and Remy, you'll likely want to add an additional tip if you enjoyed the service.

There were a lot of teens on our sailing (which was during an Easter break for many schools). They formed fast friendships and really made the most of their time and independence. A popular and quick DIY excursion that we did is getting aboard a glass bottom boat to cruise out to see the famed Cabo arch, El Arco. There are lots of active excursions in Cabo as well, including ATV tours and snorkeling trips.

If you are flying in to SAN for a Disney Cruise, you likely will not need a rental car in San Diego. Or arrange a shuttle with your travel agent or Disney directly if you prefer a pre-booked option. If you plan to explore San Diego before your cruise, much of it is walkable and Uber or Lyft will get you farther distances without the worry of paying for or finding parking.

You'll see many families with kids in those preschool, elementary and middle school years. These two ships are 984 feet long and 11 decks high, and each has the capacity for 2,713 passengers across 875 staterooms. On these two smaller ships, 70% of passenger cabins have ocean views or verandahs. To take advantage of Florida residency cruise rates, proof of Florida Residency for at least one adult in each stateroom must be presented at time of check-in.

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay. I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me. Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line. The council unanimously approved the project early Wednesday at the end of an hourslong meeting that began Tuesday evening. A second council vote for final approval of Disney's plan is required in May. Love Catalina, the official Catalina Island Tourism Authority, shared that Disney Cruise Line will return to Catalina Island, a premiere destination, in the spring of 2024.

The Island boasts 33 palate-pleasing restaurants, lively seaside bars, and an abundance of on- and off-water activities and amenities. Also, home to eight marine sanctuaries and the Catalina Island Conservancy (with 48,000 acres of pristine protected wilderness), these island treasures offer endless year-round outdoor recreation possibilities. Disney cruise ships offer many other dining options beyond the three included themed restaurants — most included, some not.

This adults-only restaurant serves Northern Italian fare and starts at about $45 per person for a multicourse brunch or dinner, though you can also order a la carte for dinner, which could cost more or less, depending on your order. Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks). This is the type of place where men need jackets and women are expected to wear dresses, pantsuits or a skirt and blouse. Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you're dressing up for these meals. At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish). A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast.

How High Do Planes Fly?

Still, with 57% of travelers in Schulz’s camp, a fair number seem to agree that the middle seat person should get both armrests. He's been a flight instructor at the University of North Dakota, an airline pilot on the CRJ-200, and has directed the development of numerous commercial and military training systems. If you're getting bounced around because of turbulence, your passengers might not be very impressed.

Why do planes not fly over the Arctic?

With this much traffic, there has to be some official arrangement to make sure collisions do not happen, and there is. If the VFR Pilots are cruising at the 1,000’s PLUS 500 feet, who is flying at each of the 1,000 foot levels? The Boeing 747 is a large, wide-body (two-aisle) airliner with four wing-mounted engines. Its wings have a high sweep angle of 37.5 for a fast, efficient cruise speed of Mach 0.84 to 0.88, depending on the variant. If you live in a sparsely populated area, an airplane is not allowed to fly any lower than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure including your house.

Cruise Performance Charts

Cars on each side of the road must stay on their own side to avoid a collision with oncoming traffic. Similarly, pilots use different cruising altitudes for vertical separation. These “roads” or “airways” in the sky are similar to traffic lanes to separate converging traffic. Many flights are not as full as they were, so they are lighter and can fly at higher altitudes, which are more fuel-efficient. … Many business jets can fly higher, routinely cruising in the high 40,000s.

The Risks Of Flying Too High.

A Boeing 747 has a cross height of 35,105 ft, while the Embraer climbs 190 to 39,370 ft. Ground speed refers to the velocity of an aircraft relative to the ground below. The ground speed is what you perceive—the sensation of movement as the landscape rushes by. However, ground speed can vary due to wind conditions, making it less reliable for precise flight calculations. Every passenger has followed along their flight's progress on the seat back entertainment — maybe wishing the plane were going just a bit faster. Nowadays, a flight's speed, course and altitude are displayed on the screen.

Fuel Efficiency

aircraft cruise altitude

Cruise altitude is usually where the higher ground speed is balanced against the decrease in engine thrust and efficiency at higher altitudes. Because the planes are headed the same way along a track, controllers make use of every available flight level and not the "east is odd, west is even odder" rule above. While jet engines operate well at high altitudes, the same is not true of piston engines, which are typically used for light aircraft of the type flown by most private pilots. Piston engines do not operate well in thin air, and this is one of the reasons why most small planes fly at altitudes of below 15,000 feet. There are certain rules for exactly where airliners can fly, and the direction of travel can affect what altitude they will climb to.

This is why when you are cruising in an airliner, it is usually bright and sunny, with all the cloud and rain below you. Commercial airplanes typically fly between 32,000 feet and 38,000 feet, with the sweet spot being approximately 35,000 feet, which is popularly referred to as cruising altitude. Commercial aircraft today cruise at altitudes of 30,000 feet and beyond. When flying as a passenger, one can often hear the flight’s cruising altitude in announcements from the cockpit.

The Role of Speed in Aircraft Design

That's where your aircraft's Fuel, Time and Distance to climb chart comes into play. For most aircraft, your time-to-climb is pretty linear, but if you're flying a normally aspirated airplane above 10,000 feet MSL, your climb rate can start dropping off significantly. On top of that, you're burning extra fuel in a climb, and flying a slower indicated airspeed too. Well, this expression says that the power to fly is proportional to the weight to the power 1.5. So if I increase the weight by 10%, the power required goes up by 15% (for the same coefficient of lift).

Commercial airlines need to operate as efficiently as possible in order to make money—and not just by charging for in-flight Wi-Fi. This makes fuel economy one of the most important factors in how high planes fly. The short answer, according to Kyrazis, is that turbojet engines burn less fuel as the air density gets lower. Delving into the intricate realm speed of aircraft has unveiled the multifaceted journey from the exhilarating moments of takeoff to the serene cruising altitudes.

Different Planes, Different Altitudes

It is powered by Pratt & Whitney engines that allow the jet to fly as high as 65,000 feet. Birds are most likely to obstruct planes at lower altitudes, and can present problems during takeoff and landing. Airways aircraft that landed on the Hudson, but that’s not typical, Jorgenson says. On the other hand, flying too high could have negative safety issues.

Vertical SeparationIn the air, pilots use vertical separation to help avoid collisions with other oncoming traffic. Pilots fly at different altitudes for different directions of flight. This altitude separation works like traffic lanes to keep aircraft flying in different directions from colliding into each other. Car drivers know they have their own side of the road to travel on.

One place you're almost guaranteed to find turbulence is around shear layers in the winds aloft. If you're flying a short distance, it doesn't make sense to spend the majority of your flight in a climb. So finally, using data in the C172N POH, let’s plot this nondimensional function  as a function of the coefficient of lift (see Figure 3). Commercial aircraft depart airports through a standard procedure, where they are under positive control of ATC. These procedures instruct pilots when to make their turns in the direction of the destination and at what altitude they should expect.

The primary reason airplanes don’t fly over the Pacific Ocean is because curved routes are shorter than straight routes. Flat maps are somewhat confusing because the Earth itself isn’t flat. As a result, straight routes don’t offer the shortest distance between two locations. The speed of a commercial aircraft varies depending on factors like aircraft type and route. On average, they typically cruise at speeds ranging from 450 to 550 knots (about 518 to 632 mph). But when planes are at cruising altitude, experts say birds are no longer a threat.

But as we flew south into the busy arrival and departure corridors for O’Hare, we were sent down. “Most bird strikes occur during takeoff and landing,” says Kyrazis. That includes the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” and the heroic landing by Captain “Sully” Sullenberger. Flying above 10,000 feet greatly reduces the risk of an encounter between bird and plane. IFR Pilots flying on a magnetic course (track) of 180 degrees through 359 degrees should fly on an even thousand foot MSL altitude.

You can see altitudes issued to other flights on flight planning services such as Fltplan.com. Those altitudes are accurate in that they were issued by center computer as an initial clearance. But what about that shorter trip—a couple hundred miles or so—especially if you’re flying near large metropolitan areas?
