With dozens of different departure dates in 2024 and 2025, Disney cruises from San Diego offer plenty of choices for couples and families. During the Disney Magic’s recent inaugural visit to the Port of Avalon, a plaque and key exchange ceremony took place aboard the ship. A small group of dignitaries boarded the ship for the ceremony, and Captain Mickey joined the group to celebrate the special moment. On these shortest cruises, concierge-level cabins and access start at a little over $5,000 for a family of four.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call. It’s a special destination that’s filled with charm, unique experiences, culture and history.

The price of a Disney cruise already includes taxes, fees, and port expenses, further enhancing its value. However, Disney cruises do not cover some expenses, such as airfare, gratuities, specialty restaurants, Port Adventures, spa treatments, bottled beverages, and alcohol purchased on a Disney cruise. Vacationers can select from various three- to seven-night cruises with ports of call that include Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico; Catalina Island in California; and Vancouver, Canada among others. Disney cruise guests can enjoy tropical climate, glass-bottom boats, panoramic Pacific views, an incredible array of wildlife, and outdoor activities like sport fishing and bison safaris on Catalina Island, California. Famous landmarks such as the iconic Catalina Casino, Catalina Island Museum, Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens, El Rancho Escondido, and Eagle’s Nest Lodge are bound to captivate visitors with their unique stories and charm. Shopping enthusiasts can explore Crescent Avenue for unique boutiques and eateries.

Disney Wonder Gets Longest San Diego Sailing Season Yet in 2022-23.

The Disney Wonder will, however, return from Australia in March 2024. It will again provide spring break sailings out of San Diego for a few months before heading to Alaska again for summer 2024. If you’re interested in booking a stay at one of these hotels before or after your Disney cruise, please get in touch with The Vacationeer. Alternatively, taxi services are readily available at the airport for those who would like to hop in a cab without using their phones to hail an Uber.

All good things must of course come to and end, and Disney Cruise is no exception. When the time comes to debark your Disney Cruise in San Diego, the process is pretty easy but does require some thinking through your plans in advance. As on all Disney Cruises, guests can opt to set their bags out the night before and have Disney whisk them off the ship. Alternately, you can opt to DIY it which gives you more flexibility on timing. We also especially enjoyed Family Karaoke, “Anyone Can Cook” cooking demonstrations, and trivia in the English pub.

Which Airport Should I Fly Into for a San Diego Cruise?

We know our guests will enjoy exploring the island, whether they’re connecting with nature, sightseeing, shopping or dining. We were honored to be chosen as an inaugural port of call for the Disney Magic this year and look forward to welcoming Disney Cruise Line to Catalina for many years to come. We find that many cruisers who first visit by sea, often return for the island’s warm weather, sparkling blue waters, colorful structures and untouched green preserve that offers a truly unique Mediterranean vibe. You'll certainly pay more for the privilege of sailing with Mickey and Minnie than with some other family-friendly lines. But for those with kids in that Disney age range, or for adults who know and trust the Disney brand, it's hard to go wrong in choosing Disney Cruise Line for your next vacation.

Expect a solid one-third of the ship's passengers to be children, so about 900 to 1,000 kids. That means there are plenty of family groups onboard -- from single families and grandparents with grandchildren to multigenerational groups and family reunions. Embarkation ports like New Orleans Galveston attract a big drive-to market, so you'll find lots of people from the Midwest and Southern United States. Alaska cruises attract a tad older demographic, including couples traveling without children, but they're still heavy on the multi-gen groups. If you plan to spend time in the city of San Diego before your cruise or if you smartly are just arriving in at least a day before the sailing date, you’ll need a hotel.

Disney Wish has, by far, the highest number of annual sailings, with 105 three- and four-night cruises departing from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. These sailings all go to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay; some also stop in Nassau, Bahamas. In the past, Disney provided two-way phones in staterooms to allow family members to keep track of one another, but these were absent on our Disney Wonder sailing. Instead, Disney's new Navigator app allows passengers to chat with one another, and we found the internet even allowed for iMessages to be sent to one another -- even when logged out of the ship's paid internet plans. If you plan to spend any time on board by the pool on San Diego sailings, keep in mind the weather patterns I already mentioned.

Disney Cruise Line Returns to Catalina Island in Spring 2024

Disney Wish is currently a workhorse of short three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Bahamas, home to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Now, Disney Cruise Line has five ships sailing in those signature colors, along with three more on order. In a normal year, those five ships take tens of thousands of families on sailings to the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, Bermuda, Bahamas, through the Panama Canal and even to Australia and New Zealand. The special offers listed below are available to book today through Sunday, October 30, 2022, while inventory lasts. But in a unique twist, Disney rotates passengers -- and their servers -- through three distinct, complimentary restaurants throughout the voyage.

Disney Cruise Line has a simple loyalty program, the Castaway Club, with four "elite status" levels that you earn based on how many cruises you've taken with Disney. A three-night and 10-night cruise both count as one sailing for these purposes. However, on round-trip cruises departing European countries with a lower drinking age, passengers years of age can drink alcohol on board with signed parental consent. For round-trip cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, guests 18 years of age and older may purchase and consume alcoholic beverages without parental consent. While some gratuity is included at Palo and Remy, you'll likely want to add an additional tip if you enjoyed the service.

There were a lot of teens on our sailing (which was during an Easter break for many schools). They formed fast friendships and really made the most of their time and independence. A popular and quick DIY excursion that we did is getting aboard a glass bottom boat to cruise out to see the famed Cabo arch, El Arco. There are lots of active excursions in Cabo as well, including ATV tours and snorkeling trips.

If you are flying in to SAN for a Disney Cruise, you likely will not need a rental car in San Diego. Or arrange a shuttle with your travel agent or Disney directly if you prefer a pre-booked option. If you plan to explore San Diego before your cruise, much of it is walkable and Uber or Lyft will get you farther distances without the worry of paying for or finding parking.

You'll see many families with kids in those preschool, elementary and middle school years. These two ships are 984 feet long and 11 decks high, and each has the capacity for 2,713 passengers across 875 staterooms. On these two smaller ships, 70% of passenger cabins have ocean views or verandahs. To take advantage of Florida residency cruise rates, proof of Florida Residency for at least one adult in each stateroom must be presented at time of check-in.

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay. I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me. Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line. The council unanimously approved the project early Wednesday at the end of an hourslong meeting that began Tuesday evening. A second council vote for final approval of Disney's plan is required in May. Love Catalina, the official Catalina Island Tourism Authority, shared that Disney Cruise Line will return to Catalina Island, a premiere destination, in the spring of 2024.

The Island boasts 33 palate-pleasing restaurants, lively seaside bars, and an abundance of on- and off-water activities and amenities. Also, home to eight marine sanctuaries and the Catalina Island Conservancy (with 48,000 acres of pristine protected wilderness), these island treasures offer endless year-round outdoor recreation possibilities. Disney cruise ships offer many other dining options beyond the three included themed restaurants — most included, some not.

This adults-only restaurant serves Northern Italian fare and starts at about $45 per person for a multicourse brunch or dinner, though you can also order a la carte for dinner, which could cost more or less, depending on your order. Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks). This is the type of place where men need jackets and women are expected to wear dresses, pantsuits or a skirt and blouse. Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you're dressing up for these meals. At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish). A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast.
